I decided to begin this blog as a way to motivate myself to write and think critically about contemporary culture. I'm not sure what the focus will be, but for now it will simply serve as a survey of art, literature, music, film, and maybe food.
"Wild Combinations" is taken from the song, "That's Us/Wild Combination" by Arthur Russell, my favorite musician. Apparently it took him six years to write and record this particular piece, which is not surprising considering his reputation as a perfectionist. I feel this is a fitting association for my blog because it deals with the continuity of creativity. In Russell's case, the creative process was cathartic. It redeemed him of his lesser qualities and emboldened him to remain active even as he was dying of AIDS. This song captures the complexity of his character and I hope it will inspire me to be more insightful in my future posts.
